His phone has been disconnected and I do wonder how "he is doing. please email me at Joseph8080@aol.com if you have any news. I never met him but had hours long talks on the phone. Please let me know. He would always regale me with long stories about his carny days. I would like to keep in touch with him. Tell him is Shlydawg. He will certainly remember me. I miss talking with him. He would always answer the phone "hello! Washington!" such a nice guy. Please let me know how he is doing. I fear the worst but HOPE for the best. He used to take my mother (his granddaughter) with him on some of his clown outings. She would also be dressed as a clown. Her name is Regina Holland Hamilton and she was around five years old at the time. I have pictures of him with fellow circus performers, including Emmett Kelly. He custom made gold rings with circus symbols for some of the performers. I believe one was made for Felix Adler. My uncle (his grandson) has thank you notes written from some of the clowns that he made rings for and has begun a search through the various correspondence. I have a men's gold lion head ring and my cousin has a ladie's clown ring that "PaPa" made for my great grandmother. The family has some of his memorabilia. We would like to organize these items into a meaningful collection for future generations. Does anyone have any correspondence, photos, or even the rings that I may purchase or copy? My mother is nearing 80. She is the only one that remembers him and I don't want his story to die. I would be most appreciative of any information that's out there and will reciprocate with any information my family has. It's currently unorganized so it may take awhile to find specific information but I promise that I will follow through with any requests.

Thank you, Laura Hamilton (Great granddaughter of Dr. L. C. Holland.)

My email is laurainrva@outlook.comAnonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12973192226687409296noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-28879641.post-4516277902121727882016-05-24T12:04:33.674-04:002016-05-24T12:04:33.674-04:00I remember Kenny from my teaching days at Clown Co...I remember Kenny from my teaching days at Clown College. It's great that you're commemorating...Pat,

It's great that you're commemorating Dan Rice's birthday. To contribute, I offer a bit of correction and addition:
- He was probably, but not conclusively, named Daniel McLaren at birth.
- His act did not include trick riding, but his circus did.
- He probably started his performing career with a trained pig, but not in a circus.
- He made his debut as a clown in 1843, in a circus in Pittsburgh.
- All circuses in the mid-19th century were one-ring circuses.
- Stories said he pulled in $1,000 a week.
- His "One-Horse Show" was publicity spin, putting a good face on the fact that most of his circus one year got foreclosed and about all he had left was one horse.
- Zachary Taylor did NOT make him an honorary colonel; that was a fiction Rice created later.
- His campaign for president came in 1867, leading up to the 1868 contest.
- Rice was on a circus in 1884-1885; made a lecture tour of Texas in 1885-1886, when he married the Cattle Queen of Lavaca County; moved back east in 1887, and made scattered appearances on shows the next few years; had a benefit at NYC's Union Square Theater in 1890; ; and took out another circus in 1891, before a blowdown around New York ended his circus career.

David CarlyonAnonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02469597386399672770noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-28879641.post-91102114219450096892016-01-14T10:39:56.375-05:002016-01-14T10:39:56.375-05:00That is DEFINITELY Everett Hart and Jimmy Spriggs!...That is DEFINITELY Everett Hart and Jimmy Spriggs!
