PEPITO: With Chaplin Impersonator (Undated)

My guess is that this is was promotion for Chaplin's The Circus so that would make this 1928, but that's just a guess.

  1. Is Pepito the same clown that appeared on I Love Lucy?

  2. This is from the premiere of Chaplin's Circus. It was at Grauman's Chinese Theatre in Hollywood, and there was a live stage show prior to the film showing. In addition to Pepito, Poodles Hanneford and family were featured as well as some other circus acts. The Poodles Hanneford collection at the ICHOF has original photo's and newspaper ads and reviews in it's library. Chaplin seemed to very much enjoy Poodles as there are quite a few photo's from different decades with Chaplin & Poodles on soundstages and circus back lots.

  4. There is film of Chaplin greeting Grock in the ring in the late 50's. The DVD, Chaplin-The Forgotten Years" covers Chaplin's life once he moved to Switzerland, and there is a section of he and his family making a yearly visit to Circus Knie and interviews and film footage of Freddie Knie and Gaston and Chaplin in his later years. Fascinating stuff!
