Apple Pectin was the liquid inside the bottle because it had the consistency of syrup.

The Skelton footage is actually from "The Ziegfeld Follies" 1944. :)

A comic by the name of Harry "King" Cole also did a fabulous "Guzzler's Gin", but out of respect for Skelton, he never did it on stage, only at private parties, Harry is probably best known for his work on "Hee Haw", with the big red handkerchief, crying on the telephone.

By the way Wed. Morning(July 8th), 10AM, EST, TCM is showing "The Ziegfeld Follies"

The sketch pre-dates Skelton and goes back to the Fred Allen radio show.
