SHANE CASHIN: Christmas Time is Here!

Shane, as he has for the last few years, helped usher in the holiday season here on the Jersey Shore by assisting his grandfather, Santa Claus, at the big tree lighting ceremony in Red Bank.

Shane and Santa are greeted at the Red Bank train station by thousands of cheering fans and lead the parade down Monmouth Street on an antique fire engine escorted by bagpipers.

They arrive at Red Bank Catholic and prepare to take the stage with Holiday Express!

They are assisted by Mrs. Claus for the countdown to the big tree lighting.

And then comes time for Shane's favorite part of the job, handing out candy canes to the crowd.

Shane even made a new friend, Mrs. New Jersey America, Parker Sanchez!

PAUL JUNG: With Gregory Peck, July 1948

An Allan Grant photograph for Life magazine of Paul Jung making up Gregory Peck for a charity performance with Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus to benefit St. John's Hospital in Hollywood.

This is another great photo that is so alien to contemporary American society in it's concept, content and composition that it almost looks like it's from another planet and not just from another age.

CLOWN ALLEY: Clyde Beatty-Cole Bros., circa 1980s

It seems like a lifetime ago when the Beatty show had an Alley like this. How great would it be if next season Johnny Pugh went "all in" and brought back the rings, the band and the clowns one last time?

PROF. MUSS: New Holiday Character

Saturday morning at the crack of dawn we began an annual tradition here at the Cashin household, listening to Daddy toss stuff around the garage as he tries to find the last minute things he's looking for to finally pack the car and leave to do a Santa breakfast.

This year I will be assisting Santa as Prof. Christopher Muss, stiltwalker, juggler and comedy-magician.

You never realize just how cautious a clown you can be until you're behind the wheel a 1929 Ford with a rear-mounted fire cannon directly in front of 2 helium filled balloons just inches from thousands of children on a cold, windy day.

Why is it that women are so fond of saying that thing about the
only difference between men and boys is the price of their toys?

CLOWN ALLEY: "Clowns and Clowning", 1905

Photos courtesy of Gene Wolande

These photos come from a 1905 magazine article (mostly about Slivers)
entitled "Clowns and Clowning".

I would argue that Slivers was anything but a "typical" circus clown of that, or any, era.

Slivers and Marceline performing their famous boxing act. Alright, Slivers and Marceline were performing this at the Hippodrome in NY. Montgomery and Stone were also performing a Boxing Gag on Broadway about this time. Does anyone know how similar these two gags were and if they bear much, if any, similarity to the Boxing Gag as Poodles Hanneford taught it to Otto Griebling?

GIANT ALUMINUM LADDERS: America's Silent Highway Killers

Yesterday afternoon as I drove over the Amboy bridge along the Garden State Parkway I was almost killed as a huge aluminum ladder, not unlike the one pictured above, flew out of the back of a contractor's pickup truck in front of me.

It sailed for a ways before hitting the ground and began tumbling end over end.

Had I been any closer it would have gone right through my windshield.

I was lucky enough to be far enough behind that I had time to change lanes (without looking) before the ladder hit the car.

If you are traveling with items in a pickup truck, please be sure to secure them properly. The life you save may be my own.

GEORGE FOOTIT, undated

From Who's Who in Victorian Cinema:

(1864-1921)
George Footit
Clown

English clown Footit trained as an equestrian acrobat with his father's circus and, by 1880, his appearances with Sanger's Circus established him as a leading horseback clown. His partnership with Cuban Raphaël Padilla, known as Chocolat (1868-1917), began at the Cirque Médrano in 1886, flourishing throughout the 1890s and early 1900s at the most fashionable Parisian circus, the Noveau Cirque. Their slapstick antics, in which Chocolat was the perenial victim of the violent, but impassive Footit, were popular with all levels of society, attracting the attention of many intellectuals and artists.

A Photoscenograph film of their sketch William Tell provided the basis for a painted picture band projected at Emile Reynaud's Théâtre Optique in August 1896, while their act was also filmed by the Lumière Cinématographe and for the Phono-Cinéma-Théâtre in 1900.

Following the break up of the partnership in the 1900s Footit appeared on the stage and for a brief time ran his own circus.

GRANDMA ON THE FRONT PAGE OF THE NY POST!!!

LAUGH & CRY: Grandma the Clown and Carrie Harvey of the Big Apple Circus (pictured) failed to brighten up Wall St. by ringing the opening bell yesterday.

LET'S SEND IN THE CLOWNS
WALL ST. GETS PIE IN FACE AS CIRCUS COMES TO TOWN

If you've thought Wall Street is being run by a bunch of clowns, yesterday you were right on the money.

Members of the Big Apple Circus took the reins of financial power by ringing the opening bell at the New York Stock Exchange.

EDITORIAL: Laughing Through The Tears

BUSINESS: Dow Plunges

MORE: Huh? Highway Man Returns His 25G Raise

The exchange invited Grandma the Clown and Master of Ceremonies Carrie Harvey to both honor the circus' 31st season of entertainment and perhaps bring a bit of Main Street levity to traders battered by a collapsing market.

After ringing the bell, Harvey and Grandma wandered the floor trying to spread joy and merriment, placing funny red noses on exchange officials to touch the funny bones of even the most shaken traders.

But by the end of a roller-coaster day of trading that saw the Dow Jones industrial average whipsaw from 300 points down to just above even and then right back down to finish off 337 points, good humor was in short supply.

"What can I say? The market ended down nearly 350 points. Even the Big Apple Circus clowns couldn't help," said Eckhart & Co. trader Peter Costa as he trudged off the floor.

Walter London, a trader with Coffey Inc., said he was so "depressed" that even a clown's mirth could do nothing to help.

"There was no lighter mood on the floor. Living this day in and day out is not fun," he said.

Some analysts said the attempt by the NYSE to send in clowns to brighten the grim mood was childish.

"It's like they're trying to be the Make-A-Wish Foundation, cheering up a terminally ill child," said Bill King, chief market strategist of M. Ramsey King Securities in Chicago. "It's a great metaphor for a financial system that has become a joke.

"It's great to try to create some levity, but there is definitely some unintended symbolism here."

Despite the gloom and doom, the circus members said they considered the experience an honor.

"It was the most phenomenal experience," Harvey said. "I rang the bell. It was so magical. I just felt privileged to be there.

"The power behind it - you are really ringing the bell, and it is loud," she said. "And I speak for Grandma as well."

By the time the market closed, all efforts at amusement were abandoned when officials - in a more traditional approach - tapped executives from the employee-management company Manpower to ring the closing bell.

This and a fright wig can get a good clown 7 minutes.

It's seen here on the Cole Bros. Circus so I'm sure it got no more than 5 seconds.

WAYNE SCOTT

News today from Greg DeSanto and Wayne Sidley is that Clown Shoes and Props founder and member of the very first class of the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Clown College, Mr. Wayne Scott is doing very poorly today and that his time looks to be coming to an end.

If you were putting it off, now might be a good time to give Marty a call and let her know that Wayne is in your thoughts and prayers.

SUNDAY MORNING ART GALLERY: Ringling Alley, 1965

Members of the Ringling Alley of 1965 in watercolor from a photo used on the cover of The Saturday Evening Post April 10, 1965.

Top row: Prince Paul Alpert, Billy Ward

Bottom Row: Mark Anthony, Michael "Coco" Polakov, Freddie Freeman and some guy from concessions.

Coco told me that this photo was taken right after a show and that's why Prince's skullcap in askew and Coco isn't wearing his nose. The photographer asked the clowns to pose after they had stared getting changed. The ones in the photo are the guys who hadn't started taking their makeup off yet. They hastily arranged themselves, posed, and then went back to getting changed.

They did it so quickly Coco didn't realize he'd already taken his putty nose off.

They were all quite surprised when the photo was selected to be on the cover of a national magazine

WTF?

Would someone please be good enough to explain this to me?
