You can get the best possible slap gloves by making them yourself. I think that the boxe routine with the giant slap gloves can still be a great entrée.
The padded slapstick is originated by whiteface clowns around the 30's. It became a standard item, specially among the Spanish whites, to get an entrée started. My childhood is scattered by souvenirs of seeing those padded slapsticks in every single circus, big or small. One of the best surviving in doing the gag with this in the old style is the Tony Alexis entrée. You can see an excellent use of it in some old footage of Barios and Francescos-Caroli . A great drummer in the band is absolutely needed to make the gag work.
