BOBBY KAY: Undated Photo

By all accounts, one of the very nicest men who ever lived.

The third of Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey's Master Clowns, Robert "Bobby Kay" Smiley.

How perfect you put this up right before Valentine's Day:

He was the heart & soul of Clown College. A true sweetheart.

Pat,

I'm guessing mid-1960's by the size of his conical hat, which got smaller in the 70's.

Bobby's middle name was something like "Kiegris" (sp?) it was a family name, hence the "K".

I met Bobby's two brothers, Joe and Walter, a magician and musician, respectfully. A most talented family. Joe and Walter worked fairs and festivals, independently of each other.

Joe's wife's name was Georgie and Walter's wife's name was Margaret.

The entire Smiley Family was as wonderful, kind, helpful and friendly as Bobby himself.

Nature's nobleman, one of the finest men...The only time I ever saw him get angry was at Lazlo Donert over some screwed-up timing--Lotzie was ad-libbing--in the horserace gag..."That was a gillipin trick," Bobby yelled back in the alley (great phrase that's stuck in my memory) and read Lazlo the riot act up one side and down the other! Very uncharacteristic of him...but with all his graciousness and generosity, he was nobody's fool and nobody's patsy! Great guy!
