RINGLING: 1940 Alley Photo


Members of the 1940 Clown Alley of the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus taken in the basement of Madison Square Garden in New York City in April at the start of the tour.

wow, look at all those clowns and how many do they have today? I'm not saying more is better, but it sure has alot more eye candy. now its no more candy, its just plain celery.

if I counted well 29 or 30 clowns.

but what wreally struck my eye:
only one august on the picture: Lou Jacobs

and tho lady clowns also next to lou jacobs.

who said peggy williams was the first woman to clown??

this is 1940 and there are two woman in the picture.

is this felix adlers wife?? and who is the otherone??

Actually Chesty Mortier (in the back row, 2nd from left) was also August.
Tho it is hard to tell, I believe the female clown on Lou's left is Lulu (wasn't she British?). I think I also see Rose Hanlon (in the top hat on Felix's right), the female clown of the 3 Hanlon's.

Yes, Chesty Mortimer is in the back row and yes, he was also an auguste.

Yes, Paul Jerome is the tramp clown in the back row.

Yes, Lulu Cranston is seated next to Lou Jacobs but I'm not 100% certain that Rose Hanlon is the whiteface in the top hat next to Felix Adler.

No, Felix Adler's wife is not in this photo. Amelia Adler didn't join the show until the 1950s.

did harry dann spend many years on the ringling show? i remember when he was on the polack show with some notables, including the sherman brothers, peluza, johnny cirillino, al ackerman, ran sinclair, locke lorraine, and others.
