Can anyone tell us why he chose to wear his make-up like this?

This is what Lou looked like between shows without his nose or headpiece.
With both in place he looks the the same Lou that we all know and love.
This photo does clearly illustrate the nose and wig's power to transform the clown's appearance though, huh?
