lets clear out the terminology on european clowning a bit.

here we don't call everything a gag or a routine.

there are two main differences.

a big act with more clowns( usual one white face and an august and a contre-august) is called an "entree".

it has a story behind it where the white face is trying to let the augusts perform a trick or a task.

examples of entrees: the broken mirror, the boxing machine, the busy bee,etc....

usually it ends with music.

well known entree clowns: the mitchells with the water entree, the rastellis, chickys,....

then you have what don christian is doing:

that is a "reprise":
short pieces in between done by one clown.

could be about everything. in the beginning the reprise used the act before but now in a funny way.

the best way to explain this is popov.
first you have the jugler: then comes popov with his pots and pans juggling act.

after the snakes and crocodiles he does his snake charmer act.

after the menagerie with farm animals he does his reprise with the rooster.

famous reprise clowns: popov, fransesco( big apple),....

and then you've got the ones out off categorie.
the star clowns: the "clown exentric"

he performs on his own but it is'nt an entree because hes alone and it isnt a reprise because the act is too long for that.

a great example for this style: larible

or grock, achille zavatta, charlie rivell

notice all the words are french:

entree, reprise ( this word means: to repeat), contre august,....

whys that: no idea
does anybody has an idea why??
