JUST TO CLARIFY...

Just to clear up any misunderstanding (a number of people emailed me privately), I am not angry at the Big Apple Circus for hosting Britney Spears, just disappointed that a much greater opportunity was missed. On the contrary, I think Ms. Spears was an extremely poor guest.

I would liken it to being invited into someone else's home only to tell them that they are stupid, their spouse is fat, their kids are ugly, the house is a dump and that dinner wasn't very good.

It is just bad manners to treat your host so poorly.

Not that Ms. Spears did anything out of character. Her lip-synched performance was the same tacky, tasteless warmed over Madonna that she's been selling for years.

What I objected to so strongly was that she decided to theme her album and tour around "circus" without spending so much as a moment learning what a circus actually is.

See, she thinks that her life is like a circus. Really? How so? I watched the video and I still don't see any tangible connection between the tabloid hungry celebu-tard lifestyle she is internationally famous for and any aspect of the circus as I know it.

Had she actually sung, selected a better song (one that didn't sound like a half-forgotten Janet Jackson album track that you didn't really care about from 20 years ago) and actively collaborated with the stellar cast of this year's Big Apple Circus she might have created something really interesting; something of merit that was mutually beneficial to both parties.

Instead she claimed to be like a "ringleader" in the "center of the ring" and prance around like the chowderheaded piece of fluffy puff pastry that she is, loudly proclaiming her inflated sense of self-importance while surrounded by the cast of HBO's Carnevale and some members of the Red Triangle Circus Gang from Batman Returns.

Yup, that's circus for 'ya, in all of it's glory.

With such a wealth of talent in this year's show it's a shame that she and her handlers weren't more interested in promoting circus in general and the Big Apple Circus specifically, rather than choosing to callously exploit it.

But then, exploitation is really what the Britney Spears story is all about, isn't it?

I mean how much can you blame her? She doesn't really strike me as a terribly bad person. Just a sad, undereducated young woman ill-equipped to deal with the machine that is eating her alive for the amusement of a global audience.

An audience that now thinks that the Big Apple Circus is a tawdry little Fellini-esque museum piece that condones keeping women in cages.

That said, once again I remind you that I am fully aware that absolutely no one involved gives a fig what I think.

Anyway, here's a clip from the Today Show promoting a previous edition of the BAC with the type of media exposure that might actually bring paying customers in to see the show for themselves.

And Al Roker makes a comment at the end far more risque than anything Britney did...

To help cleanse the palate after yesterday's post about the Big Apple Circus' recent Britney blunder, let's look at this video featuring one of the BAC's recent better moves and focus on the positive, shall we?

PROP 8: The Musical

Whether you find this funny or not you have to admit, this is still considerably less ghey than Britney Spears at the Big Apple Circus.

BRITNEY SPEARS: Good Morning America from the Big Apple Circus

Just in case anyone cares what I think, I hate every single moment of this with the intensity of a million white dwarf stars exploding into supernova simultaneously.

I hate it like I hate war.

I hate it like I hate cancer.

I hate it like I hate Nazis.

I haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaate it.

I find the fact that the Big Apple Circus would knowingly and actively participate in yet another crass ma$$-media degradation of the image and medium of circus deeply disheartening.

That said, I am well aware that absolutely no one involved gives a damn what I think.

MICROFEST: Bill Irwin Workshop, December 1, 2008

We had a wonderful time with Mr. Irwin yesterday...

Bill getting ready and setting the props to perform his Spaghetti Gag. He told us that the gag was created in Clown College in 1974 and the inspiration for the piece came after Mike Naughton taught him some plate moves.

I spoke with Mr. Naughton this evening and he told me that they had been working together in Clown College on a variation on the plate entree that the Francescos performed in the film Rings Around the World.

BILL IRWIN: The Regard of Flight, PBS 1983

Tomorrow I will be taking part in a full day intensive workshop with Tony award winning actor and clown, Bill Irwin.

The workshop is made all the more special in that I will be taking it alongside friends from just about every phase of my clowning career as well as some of the very best physical and visual comedians in America.

Needless to say, I'm very excited.

Below are a few scenes from Mr. Irwin's The Regard of Flight...

CLOWN ALLEY: New Cole Bros. Circus

As sad as this is to watch, it's even sadder when you remember that half the Ringling alley looks just as bad if not worse.

SHANE CASHIN: Christmas Time is Here!

Shane, as he has for the last few years, helped usher in the holiday season here on the Jersey Shore by assisting his grandfather, Santa Claus, at the big tree lighting ceremony in Red Bank.

Shane and Santa are greeted at the Red Bank train station by thousands of cheering fans and lead the parade down Monmouth Street on an antique fire engine escorted by bagpipers.

They arrive at Red Bank Catholic and prepare to take the stage with Holiday Express!

They are assisted by Mrs. Claus for the countdown to the big tree lighting.

And then comes time for Shane's favorite part of the job, handing out candy canes to the crowd.

Shane even made a new friend, Mrs. New Jersey America, Parker Sanchez!

PAUL JUNG: With Gregory Peck, July 1948

An Allan Grant photograph for Life magazine of Paul Jung making up Gregory Peck for a charity performance with Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus to benefit St. John's Hospital in Hollywood.

This is another great photo that is so alien to contemporary American society in it's concept, content and composition that it almost looks like it's from another planet and not just from another age.

CONGRATULATIONS!!! Joel Heidtman Has a Son!

CLOWNALLEY.NET welcomes the newest member of the Alley,
Mr. Benjamin Joel Heidtman!

He's named "Benjamin" for Benjamin Moore, the brand of paint Joel was huffing just before this photo was taken.

From Joel's brother, Mike...

For those of you not following the adventure as it unfolded yesterday on
Facebook, Joel and his wife just had a baby boy named Benjamin Joel
Heidtman. Mother and child are doing great and big sister Sophie is
happy to have a baby brother.

CLOWN ALLEY: Clyde Beatty-Cole Bros., circa 1980s

It seems like a lifetime ago when the Beatty show had an Alley like this. How great would it be if next season Johnny Pugh went "all in" and brought back the rings, the band and the clowns one last time?

PROF. MUSS: New Holiday Character

Saturday morning at the crack of dawn we began an annual tradition here at the Cashin household, listening to Daddy toss stuff around the garage as he tries to find the last minute things he's looking for to finally pack the car and leave to do a Santa breakfast.

This year I will be assisting Santa as Prof. Christopher Muss, stiltwalker, juggler and comedy-magician.

You never realize just how cautious a clown you can be until you're behind the wheel a 1929 Ford with a rear-mounted fire cannon directly in front of 2 helium filled balloons just inches from thousands of children on a cold, windy day.

Why is it that women are so fond of saying that thing about the
only difference between men and boys is the price of their toys?

CLOWN ALLEY: "Clowns and Clowning", 1905

Photos courtesy of Gene Wolande

These photos come from a 1905 magazine article (mostly about Slivers)
entitled "Clowns and Clowning".

I would argue that Slivers was anything but a "typical" circus clown of that, or any, era.

Slivers and Marceline performing their famous boxing act. Alright, Slivers and Marceline were performing this at the Hippodrome in NY. Montgomery and Stone were also performing a Boxing Gag on Broadway about this time. Does anyone know how similar these two gags were and if they bear much, if any, similarity to the Boxing Gag as Poodles Hanneford taught it to Otto Griebling?

GIANT ALUMINUM LADDERS: America's Silent Highway Killers

Yesterday afternoon as I drove over the Amboy bridge along the Garden State Parkway I was almost killed as a huge aluminum ladder, not unlike the one pictured above, flew out of the back of a contractor's pickup truck in front of me.

It sailed for a ways before hitting the ground and began tumbling end over end.

Had I been any closer it would have gone right through my windshield.

I was lucky enough to be far enough behind that I had time to change lanes (without looking) before the ladder hit the car.

If you are traveling with items in a pickup truck, please be sure to secure them properly. The life you save may be my own.

GEORGE FOOTIT, undated

From Who's Who in Victorian Cinema:

(1864-1921)
George Footit
Clown

English clown Footit trained as an equestrian acrobat with his father's circus and, by 1880, his appearances with Sanger's Circus established him as a leading horseback clown. His partnership with Cuban Raphaël Padilla, known as Chocolat (1868-1917), began at the Cirque Médrano in 1886, flourishing throughout the 1890s and early 1900s at the most fashionable Parisian circus, the Noveau Cirque. Their slapstick antics, in which Chocolat was the perenial victim of the violent, but impassive Footit, were popular with all levels of society, attracting the attention of many intellectuals and artists.

A Photoscenograph film of their sketch William Tell provided the basis for a painted picture band projected at Emile Reynaud's Théâtre Optique in August 1896, while their act was also filmed by the Lumière Cinématographe and for the Phono-Cinéma-Théâtre in 1900.

Following the break up of the partnership in the 1900s Footit appeared on the stage and for a brief time ran his own circus.
