DAN RICE: Even More from Girard

The sign that got me to stop...

I was working at a fair just outside of Girard and had driven through there three or four times that week, usually at night, and knew that I recognized the name from somewhere but didn't make the connection until I was headed for an oil change and driving by at 40 MPH when I saw this sign, stopped dead and backed up...

More Girard pictures tomorrow...

DAN RICE: Girard, PA

I loaded all of my photos onto my laptop last night and was suprised to find several shots from my unexpected visit to Girard, PA this past summer.

Judging from this photograph, Dan Rice was pretty suprised too!

This portrait of "Yankee Dan" hangs in the municipal building in Girard, which is located in the center of downtown on the site of Mr. Rice's former home.

More photos tomorrow!

Circus season is over and Santa season has now officially begun!

The Cashin Comedy Co.'s 7th annual Christmas season at the Galleria Shops in Red Bank, NJ starts tomorrow but things kicked off tonight with Santa's train ride from Little Silver, his arrival in Red Bank, a firetruck ride in the parade down Monmouth St. and the tree lighting on Broad St. with a concert by Holiday Express.

ABC/BOSCOV'S THANKSGIVING DAY PARADE: Philadelphia 2007

Jerry Hunsberger and I took the clown car out this morning and rode through downtown Philly in the ABC/Boscov's 2007 Thanksgiving Day Parade. The car act was a big hit
and I got to meet several of the Sesame Street Muppets as well as some Disney characters.

We didn't get any footage of the act, but we did get this video, my first posted directly to Blogger and not to YouTube...

CLOWN ALLEY: The Greatest Show on Earth (1952)

If Betty Hutton would get her damn, dirty ape paws off of "Moses, the NRA Poster Boy" long enough for them to both get out of the way we could get a much better look at what's really important in this picture... the members of the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus Clown Alley of 1951.

From left to right we have Lou Jacobs, Charlie Bell, Prince Paul (obscured behind Hutton's big clunky elbow), Ernie "Blinko" Burch up high (and shirtless?!?) and Jimmy Armstrong. Who knows how many other clowns are also in the ring but our view of them is obstructed by the freakishly wide shoulders and Indiana Jones-style fedora of Chuckles Heston?

CLOWN ALLEY: Clown College Auditions 7/8/82

Master Clown Glen "Frosty" Little and Blue Unit Boss Clown Tom Parrish on July 8, 1982 holding Clown College auditions at the Tucson Community Center to find out if the wannabees have what it takes to wear the big shoes.

The would-be clowns were asked to transform themselves into lawn mowers, vacuum cleaners and hair dryers. They also had to imitate the road clowns' gag, which involved a giant sandwich and some pepper. Apparently there is no such thing as a slow-paced circus clown audition — the entire process took less than an hour.

YOUTUBE SITUATION

For those of you who are not aware, my YouTube account was terminated last week and almost 100 rare circus and clown clips that I'd posted were removed due to "copyright violation".

I'm not convinced that the agency registering the complaint holds the copyright on these videos and am almost positive that the clip in question is actually in the public domain!

And the fact that NONE of them are posted in their entirety and only posted there so that they could be imbedded here for educational purposes should more than satisfy the requirements for "fair use" for educational purposes.

I'm not SELLING them, I'm sharing them! Leave it to lawyers to figure out a way that a person can't GIVE something away!

From now on I'll be posting my videos directly to blogger but I'd like for You Tube to reinstate the account so that the previous videos will continue to be available.

I'm not going to re-edit and re-post 100 video clips.

I don't seem to be getting anywhere with their customer service folks. Perhaps a letter writing campaign will help.

If you'd like to see the videos that I've posted here be made available again PLEASE send an email to copyright@youtube.com and let them know that those clips DO serve an educational purpose here at CLOWNALLEY.NET and you like to see the account reinstated.

My YouTube ID was cashincomedy.

Maybe that will help. Who knows?

WILBUR "WILLIE" HALL: In "THE KING OF JAZZ" (1930)

Link suggested by Michael Karp

Violin in hand and "Little Tisch" lean shoes on his feet: Wilbur Hall in the film THE KING OF JAZZ (1930). KING OF JAZZ is a musical, filmed in early Technicolor, that preserves a part of America’s musical heritage that few people today know ever existed. The film has no plot, but consists of a series of extraordinary production numbers all directed by John Murray Anderson with the music supplied by Paul Whiteman, "the King of Jazz," and his orchestra.

Whiteman, unknown now to all but specialists, had a musical career that ran from before World War I into the early sixties. His band was one of the most successful in history – their first hit, "Whispering," sold two million copies in 1920, about one for every record player in the country. It was the first of more than 20 number-one hits that the band would record in the twenties. However, Whiteman made his greatest contribution to American music in 1924, when he commissioned and then premiered George Gershwin’s "Rhapsody in Blue."

AU REVOIR PARAPLUIE

WRITTEN AND DIRECTED BY JAMES THIÉRRÉE

DEC 9 & 16 AT 3PM
BAM (Brooklyn Academy of Music) HARVEY THEATER
RUNNING TIME: 100MIN
TICKETS: $20, 35, 50, 60

Nouveau cirque wunderkind James Thiérrée makes his highly anticipated return to BAM with the soulful Au Revoir Parapluie, the follow-up to Bright Abyss, his transfixing, sold-out debut at the 2005 Next Wave Festival.

Marvelous physical theatrics—acrobatics, dance, mime, music—abound. The show begins with a fantastic creature, covered in gold glitter and crooning in an unidentifiable tongue. Realizing that it can’t escape its golden shroud, its face crumples in anguish. The curtain opens to reveal ominously swirling ropes on which climb changelings—careening, flying, and dancing in pitched battle with rocking chairs and great swaths of black cloth. With Au Revoir Parapluie (which translates as "Farewell Umbrella") the extraordinarily gifted and charming Thiérrée and his astonishing company achieve a most delicate balance of pathos and delight.

PIO NOCK: "Circus World" (1964)

Another video uploaded to YouTube by Sandy Weber, this time it's Pio Nock's scenes from the John Wayne film CIRCUS WORLD.

This from Sandy...

Your recent post of Pio Nock reminded me that I have footage of him
from the movie Circus World (which I'm sure you have seen). I have
cut all of his scenes into one clip and uploaded my first YouTube
video - Hurrah!!

This includes the scenes where he doubled for Richard Conte on the
highwire. I remember seeing his act when he appeared on Ringling and
it was just as thrilling (and funnier) seeing him perform live over a
tiger's cage as it appears on film. We also get to see him doing a
funny plate smashing routine. Do you happen to know the name of the
white face clown appearing with him?

THIS JUST IN:

THE RASTELLIS

Sandy Weber has uploaded this clip of the Rastellis entree from the Mary Hart hosted television show GREAT CIRCUSES OF THE WORLD. It purports to be from Stockholm Sweden in 1978 but it was shot for a special on circus clowns a few years earlier than that.

CLOWN ALLEY: Clyde Beatty-Russel Bros. 1944

The other day I received very nice messages from the grandson and daughter of longtime circus clown Dick "Rocco" Lewis. His daughter Kathleen was kind enough to help correct some misinformation here about her Dad so I thought that I'd dig around the web and see what else I could find about him.

Below you'll find the clown-relevant snippets from a great article that I found on the Circus Historical Society website about the Clyde Beatty-Russell Bros. Circus tour of 1944 where "Rocco" was prominently featured...

----------------------------------------------

Clyde Beatty and Russell Bros. Combined Circus, Season of 1944
By Chang Reynolds. Bandwagon, Vol. 13, No. 3 (May-Jun), 1969, pp. 10-19.

...The clowns handled their trunks and props and put up the clown dressing tent and tore it down.

..."It went along like this until we got to Pasadena," related Matthie, "when the clowns went on strike. We went to Jack Joyce and told him that we wouldn't move the trunks or put up the dressing top and tear it down anymore. He gave us a hard look and said it didn't make any difference whether we were on the show or not. So we went back to hauling the trunks and putting up the tent and tearing it down."

...In addition to the above, Matthie's work consisted of setting up the bandstand, calliope and its motor and compressor, the P.A. system (this included tw 6 ft. stakes), ticket sales downtown, cigars, candy, and cigarettes, work the matinee and night show, and then tear down and load all of the above. He was paid separately for all of those jobs. Putting up and tearing down the clown tent and handling the clown props was part of the clown act and was included in his pay for clowning.

Clown alley in San Diego. Dick Lewis is in the center with Walt Matthie at the upper left. Alva Evans is at the right front. Doc Hayden photo
(*I would add that it looks like Dennis Stevens kneeling to the right of Dick Lewis with Art Cooksey standing above him. ~PC)

...The clowns were introduced in Display No. 3. The Official Route Book for the season lists eighteen clowns, nine of whom were on the show for the road tour after the show left Los Angeles. The others were present only for the big 24-day stand; and one joined in Kansas to finish the tour. The nine who toured were Brownie Gudath, Rene Thezan, Dick Lewis, Walt Matthie, Alva Evans, Alex Lowande, Gus Lind, George Perkins (who left in Idaho), and Hughie Kyle.

...Following the web act, Albert Fleet presented Clyde Beatty's two chimpanzees, "Mickey" and "Minnie." "Mickey," the male, was a powerful ape who hated clowns and often went into a rage at the sight of anyone wearing white clothing. This even included Beatty who always wore a white uniform when working. Since the clown fire-house number frequently followed Fleet's act, "Mickey" had a great opportunity to unleash his vengeance upon the men in white-face. Chairs, props, and an occasional axle flew through the air as the men in white entered, and the chimps left, the arena. Alva Evans wore a white clown suit and a monkey mask in one number and "Mickey" seized the bars of his cage and rocked it furiously every time he spotted the clown in this attire. To show that he was truly impartial, he bit off the end of Albert Fleet's thumb during the Los Angeles stand.

...The Wild West concert was introduced and then Dick Lewis played the part of the frantic bride in the burning house. Brownie Gudath was inside with the fire pot and the rest of the poeys tried to put out the fire and catch the rather weighty Lewis as he leaped to safety. The fire pot, manned by Gudath, was constructed from a coffee pot which burned gasoline. Clouds of smoke were created by blowing through the tubing into the pot. Later, at Anacortes, Washington, the long grass inside the house caught fire from the torch and the clowns outside threw quantities of water into the enclosure to save Lewis and Gudath from being toasted. Upon emerging, these two smoked-up clowns berated the others for getting them wet!

FELIX ADLER: An Unusual Photo

An unusual 1940 autographed photo of "The King of Clowns" Felix Adler in costume but out of makeup.

I can't be certain, but I have the strong suspicion that Felix used his starched white and spangled wardrobe exclusively for "picture day" at the beginning of the season, switched to a similar wardrobe in red or yellow for the indoor dates in NY and Boston and then wore this plaid suit for most of the remainder of the season for the outdoor dates.

Duane "Uncle Soapy" Thorpe would have taken a page out of that book when he'd have his program picture taken in a beautiful new costume with his bald top burgundy yak wig all styled and set and then switch back to his trusty sythetic orange afro and red jacket as soon as the season started.

The birdcage top hat that Felix is sporting in this photo is now in the collection of the Circus World Museum in Baraboo, WI.

I don't think that I ever realized before just how closely related Poodles makeup is to that of Michael "Coco" Polikovs, just add a putty nose, a wig and a sailor hat and I think that you're most of the way there.

But I don't think that Mike was much of an equestrian and I don't think that Poodles was noted for stilts or soap gags, so the similarities end there.

LOU JACOBS: Papa Lou

CONGRATULATIONS DOLLY AND PEDRO!!!

They were the consummate circus power couple when an equipment malfunction during a Big Apple Circus performance grounded daredevil aerialist Pedro Reis only two days after he proposed to “Queen of the Air” Dolly Jacobs.

After recovering from his accident, Reis experimented with other circus acts and created an aerial pas de deux with Jacobs called “On Wings Of Love”, but the flame and passion for performing had scarred him. They then decided to form their own circus, but one with great heart and a mission to serve the community in a way that no other circus had before. In 1997, Circus Sarasota was born in Sarasota, Florida, the historic home of Circus King John Ringling and his wife, Mable.

Jacobs and Reis took every risk, financially and emotionally, to nurture and build Circus Sarasota into an organization that made everyone proud. Their critically acclaimed seasonal performances in February have elevated the profile of the circus arts, building a following among those who normally frequent opera houses and concert halls. Throughout the year, their professional clowns provide therapeutic outreach and meaningful encounters with individuals in institutions such as nursing homes and adult day care centers. Professional circus performers also provide a curriculum-based educational program in local schools and after-school centers. Over 5,000 individuals young and old every year are touched by their programs.

Circus Sarasota celebrated its 10th season in 2007. “We had waited long enough to get married and now Circus Sarasota is not only stable, but successful,” says Reis. Their wedding takes place today, Friday October 26, 2007 in the courtyard of the John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art with over 250 guests from far and wide in attendance.

Born to circus stardom, Dolly Jacobs the daughter of legendary clown, Lou Jacobs, was a headliner with her balletic aerialist Roman Ring act. Her father, who passed away in 1992, will be remembered with a memorial on each guest table at the wedding.

Pedro Reis, who received his circus training at a YMCA in Cape Town, South Africa, was also a headliner. He created the Survivors, an aerial act that was considered one of the most daring in circus history and later as a solo aerialist on the cloud-swing, another death defying act. He and Jacobs first met while rehearsing with the Ringling Brothers, Barnum and Bailey Circus. As their relationship grew, many in the circus world whispered that their love was reminiscent of another great aerialist couple – Lillian Leitzel and Alfredo Cordona who, in the early 20th century were considered the most spectacular aerialists of all time. Tragically, Lillian fell to her death in an equipment malfunction and Cordona pined for her the rest of his life.

The love story of Pedro Reis and Dolly Jacobs has a much happier ending, one which serves as a romantic reminder of the power of two.

Circus Sarasota will open its 2008 season on February 1 and run through February 24. For more information, visit www.circussarasota.org.

Pedro and Dolly,

Here's wishing that the immense joy that your artistry has created over the years be returned to you a thousand-fold on this, your wedding day, and from this day forward into your new lives together as husband and wife.

With love,
Pat, Terry & Shane

CLOWN ALLEY: Dobritch Int. Circus, Winnipeg 1954

Video courtesy of Bill Strong

A very quick video from Bill Strong of the Alley on the 1954 Dobritch International Circus in Winnipeg, Ont. This is a test as Bill emailed me the file last night and I converted it for mac this morning. Even though I upgraded the software I can't seem to get the words that appear on the screen to go away.

But it's an interesting 20 seconds (the opening credits are longer than the video itself) so I thought I'd post it now and fix it later. If people can start emailing me video we're going to be opening this thing up to a lot more footage!!!

As for this, first we see tramp clown Jimmy Davidson, then Ernie "Blinko" Burch in his auguste makeup and finally whiteface John Toy who is probably best known to an entire generation who grew up on Bill Ballantine's book CLOWN ALLEY as the only guy in the world who Lou Jacobs didn't get along with.

MARK ANTHONY: The Bullfight Gag, Ringling 1964

Mark Anthony performs a bullfight (with dogs as the bulls) on the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus in 1964.

The source footage is very dark so we see two performances of the gag from two different shows, the second of which I tried to digitally make a little brighter.

In between we see Jackie Le Claire and Billy Ward performing a variation on Jackie's father's (Jack LeClair) "Spark Plug" bendover walkaround with Jackie replacing Barney Google's horse Spark Plug with a circus elephant.

THIS JUST IN!!!

_______________________________________________

From Jackie himself...

You know, of course, that my father created and built this bendover way back in the 40's.

He had previously a bendover horse that he called Spark Plug. Spark Plug was a cartoon horse in the Snuffy Smith cartoon
series. It was Barney Google's horse. The horse was always drawn with a full length blanket, not showing the legs. My father got the idea of what a great bendover it would make as you would not have to worry about legs.

He trained me in it and I must say it was always a great surprise and made a big hit in the show and also on the South American, Cuban, Russian and European tours as it was different. He had the horse head from a wire frame and paper mache. The ears wiggled back and forth, the eyes used to light up and powder would shoot out of it's nostrils, making it all the more interesting.

It was indeed, very heavy, so when he created the elephant, (he laughed that after all his year with circuses, he actually had to go down to the library to get a photo of what an elephant really looked like) it was done with simply a wire frame covered by grey material and accents.

It was so much lighter!

He always admired Paul Wentzel's piano wire creations and would have built it that way but working with piano wire, welding it, that was a skill that he did not have.

Billy Ward worked the cloth and yes, he did it well in Russia (first time I ever worked with him) and Europe and the finish of the '64 season.

I still have it, or rather it is stored at Chuck Sidlow's. We did do it once at Van Wezel.

Hope this is enough information for you.

Love,
Jackie
